It actually was fun and challenging. In fact, I need to keep going just to clean out my pantry some more. I am short on quite a few things, so we might have a fairly expensive bill at sam's later today. I am excited because now I can go shopping at Smith's Mega sale and not feel guilty.

I wasn't feeling well on Saturday night, so I had to send Nate to the store for milk. He spent $6.58 on 3 gallons of milk and 1 dozen eggs. We probably could have made it on 2 gallons, but I just didn't care at that moment. We went over the $100, but just barely.

Grand totals

Days without spending money: 16
Total money spent: $102.66

Anyway, I hope I can keep it up. I learned that it wasn't that hard and not that different than we normally live. Now I need to figure out a new challenge. Any suggestions?Haystack Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01623665634391378132noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5021248701695174732.post-62519301253975181412010-01-29T13:44:00.000-08:002010-01-30T10:15:51.608-08:00Amazing FriendsI am almost finished. In my last post, I talked about not being sure if I could make it the last few days without going over my budget because we needed milk. The next day after writing the post, I was talking to a friend about it and how I could try powdered milk. A few minutes later, she showed up at my house with 3 gallons of milk and CHOCOLATE! She totally made my day.

As a result, I was able to go 4 days this week without spending money. I did spend money on Monday, but that was only to send a package to my sister so it didn't count as groceries.

This week, I also baked a lot. I made 2 batches of wheat bread, brownies and zucchini chocolate chip cookies, and sugar cookies (from a bag.) We still ate from our food storage. We are running low on a few basics for lunches, but I still have quite a bit of food that needs to be used. We still have tons of potatoes and sweet potatoes, but made a big dent. Next month, I think I will continue cooking from my food storage, but will stock up on a few things. The goal is to not spend double next month.

Only 2 days left, wish us luck!

Days without spending money: 15
Grand total: $96.08Haystack Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01623665634391378132noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5021248701695174732.post-948573386880206312010-01-25T07:39:00.000-08:002010-01-25T14:33:11.093-08:00Almost thereWe are starting on our last week of the challenge and things are moving on. I won't write what we have been eating for days 18-21 mainly because I don't remember. I did have to get milk, eggs, yogurt, cheese and hot dogs which cost $17.35, but I did use coupons. Oh ya, I had a type-o last entry and my total was supposed to be $78.73 not $88.73.

This is what I have learned so far:

I love/hate living in a city where there are so many options for shopping. I am able to get great deals by going to different stores that are all really close to each other, but that also tempts me to spend more money.

Cooking out of our food storage is easy and not different from what I normally do since we almost never go out to eat.

The biggest problem I have is the little money I spend here and there. I am not sure if I am going to make it under the $100, we are probably going to go over by a little bit.

I am still spending quite a bit on diapers and other household stuff. Next month, I may try to work on this goal. I could be saved if the twins would just get potty trained!!!!!

Grand total so far: $96.08 -we are going to need milk before next week--ahh
Days without spending money: 11Haystack Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01623665634391378132noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5021248701695174732.post-33385828611167359702010-01-20T12:13:00.001-08:002010-01-21T09:16:42.319-08:00Day 15-17I am still going strong, but not as good as blogging about it. I was pretty lazy. Our church got out at 2:00 so I just let the kids have snacks for lunch. I also didn't spend any money yesterday so I started out good.

Breakfast: Pancake mountains with free eggs from my parent's chickens
Lunch: Snacks
Dinner: Spaghetti for us and PB and J for the kids

Day 8

Breakfast: Pancakes
Lunch: Corndogs, meatballs and leftovers
Dinner:

Grand total spent: $32.45
Total days with out spending money:Haystack Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01623665634391378132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5021248701695174732.post-27370249649831384882010-01-09T19:01:00.000-08:002010-01-09T19:13:40.671-08:00Day 5 and 6I had a bit of a break in the challenge the past couple of days. I just couldn't resist Macey's caselot, but I was still good.

Day 5
Breakfast: Cereal
Lunch: Peanut Butter sandwiches and leftovers for me
Dinner: Tuna Casserole- Not very good, but cheap and easy

Day 6
Breakfast: Cereal again although we eat a lot of cereal, I got it for free so I don't feel too bad
Lunch: Fishsticks and leftovers
Dinner: Homemade rolls and Mexican creamy turkey soup --using corn from my mom's garden

$$$

Here's the deal. We did make the 3 gallons of milk I bought monday last until today so I bought 3 more at Sam's. I also had to buy fruit snacks since it is the only way I can get the kids to take naps for a total of $13.40 I also bought 10 yogurts for $0.25 each (with coupon) and 2 bags of cereal at $0.89 each at Macey's I did buy a few other things, but am counting them to food storage. If it comes in a #10 can, it's food storage. So the total for today was $19.05.
Grand total $32.45. Not great but a good start. I will do better, right?

I not spend any money 4 days this week, so that was something. I also cooked out of my food storage everyday, which was an accomplishment.Haystack Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01623665634391378132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5021248701695174732.post-38326167261109424752010-01-07T13:35:00.000-08:002010-01-08T08:40:02.823-08:00Day #3 and #4Things are moving along, but I am having a hard time not hitting the case lot sales this week. I think I am also going thru withdrawls. I feel like I need to spend money just to get out of the house. Hopefully, like a drug addict I can get over the initial shock and keep going.

Day #3- Wed
Breakfast: oatmeal and cereal
Lunch: Fishsticks and leftovers for me
Dinner: BBQ chicken, BBQ beans, sweet potato fries and brussel sprouts (from the co-op)

No money spent for a total of 3 days this week
Grand total money spent $10.50

Day #4-Thurs
Breakfast: Cereal
Lunch: Smoothies
Dinner: Sausage Rice casserole for big people and a mixture of other stuff for the smalls.

I did break down and went out. I mainly just wandered aimlessly. I did spend $2.87 on clearance chocolate for potty prizes (and for me in a pinch.)

Grand total spent $13.37Haystack Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01623665634391378132noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5021248701695174732.post-42907714116760441502010-01-06T12:24:00.001-08:002010-01-06T12:29:29.678-08:00Day #2Yesterday went pretty well. I am taking a tip from Suze Orman to not spend any more for 1 day a week, but am going further and going to try for 3-4 days a week. 1 day is pretty easy since we don't typically shop on Sunday, so let's go for more. I didn't spend any money yesterday, so 2 days this with no money spent and I went to the library for free!!

Meals

Breakfast: Cereal
Lunch: Chicken nuggets and tator tots
Dinner: Steak that we got from my parents' farm and roasted sweet potatoes, potatoes and yellow squash

I also made 2 loaves of wheat bread with fresh ground wheat. My kids are very picky and won't usually eat what I made for dinner, but they will eat bread and peanut butter so that will probably save us thru this whole thing. Each loaf costs about $0.50 to make.Haystack Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01623665634391378132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5021248701695174732.post-85252216966539246902010-01-05T13:50:00.001-08:002010-01-05T14:13:40.588-08:00Food Storage ChallengeI read about this challenge yesterday on a blog. I overspent at Christmas so I am trying to get our financial house back in order. The basics of this challenge are to eat out of your food storage, limit money spent of groceries and use up food that has been sitting around for 1 month.

I decided to use my blog as a way to track how we are doing and to actually commit to "rules."

The "rules" I decided on are:

1. Eat out of our food storage -- this includes using the sweet potatoes/potates from our garden that are going to go bad soon.

2. Spend only $100 on groceries - this is a cut of $200, but will include milk, fresh item. This may be a problem since we do use a gallon of milk a day, but we will try. This will not include our veggie co-op, which is $16.50 every two weeks.

We will finish this on 1/31/10. So here is how we are doing so far.

Mon:
Breakfast: Fruit left over from a party yesterday and cereal
Lunch: Corn dogs from freezer
Dinner: Sweet potato burritos - I also made 8 more for the freezer for Nate's lunch

$$$$
Spent $10.50 on 2 gallons of milk and fish sticks for lunch at Sam'sHaystack Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01623665634391378132noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5021248701695174732.post-66444445868576199872010-01-04T12:39:00.000-08:002010-01-04T14:40:22.770-08:00Yet again, it has been a long time since I have posted anything. So, I'll just post a little of everything from the last 6 months.

In July, we had family pictures taken at the Layton Park. I was surprised how well it went. Usually, we can never get one picture with all the kids looking at the camera, but it went great. Our photographer did a great job. (http://www.swjphotography.com/ -we are even on her front page of her site)

For Elias' 4th Birthday in August, he had to had the same cake as last year - Elmo. I was to cheap to buy the one he wanted from Sam's, so I tried to recreate it. It is still pretty new.)

www.haystackfarm.blogspot.com Haystack Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01623665634391378132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5021248701695174732.post-52430884637432091672009-06-11T15:38:00.000-07:002009-06-11T15:54:58.704-07:00Once again, I am way behind on blogging. I wonder if starting a blog was a good thing, because now I just feel guilty that I don't update it enough. Oh well, I'll just add it to the list of things that are undone in our house. I thought I would post a few pictures from the last few months that I think are fun.

These pictures were taken at the Nature Conservancy park in West Layton. It had just rained and we had a great time. Notice the rainbow in the background. It was a beautiful day.

These pictures were at Nate's cousin's home in Layton. She has a beautiful spring yard and we try to take pictures here every year. We even had our engagement pictures taken here. This year, we couldn't find anyone to take our pictures or to come help with the kids, so we tried to do it ourselves. It didn't work. The kids were like wild Indians and never held still, but I guess it is a good representation of our true lives.

Oops, I just realized I have already posted these on facebook. As many of you know, I have started a small business with my garden veggies. I am glad to report that things are going well and we actually have veggies!! We have been eating them for a while, but now are ready to start selling!! I have created a blog to let everyone know what is currently ready to eat!!

I know that this is slightly silly, but I gotta start somewhere!! I put a bag in the fridge to thaw. Being the food scientist that I am and after teaching too many food safety classes, I really hate dealing with raw meat. I always imagine the germs everywhere. Anyway, I double bagged it and put it on a plate while I went to my parents' house overnight. We woke up Sunday morning to a huge mess. Raw chicken juice had leaked down the bottom 4 shelves/drawers of the fridge and had settled into a sticky, frozen mess. I spent hours cleaning it up and used up 1/2 a bottle of Lysol disinfectant, but at least the bottom part of the fridge was clean.

You may think that all was well with the world after that, but there is more. I brought some frozen hamburger back from my parents and accidentally left it in the car overnight, but it was still partially frozen so I put it on the top shelf of the fridge. Just as I was feeding the a kids lunch, which is like feeding time at the zoo, I opened the fridge to get ketchup and found the hamburger had leaked too!!!! This time it was from the top shelf and all down the sides and every shelf/drawer. AHHHHHH!! I thought I few choice words. (ok, maybe a lot of choice words) I yelled at the kids to hurry and get out of the kitchen, which I do feel bad about since it wasn't their fault and spent the next hour cleaning up dried blood with McKay attached to my leg.

Good thing I still had the other 1/2 of the bottle of Lysol. I hope you can laugh at this. Maybe I'll join you tomorrow. I also have a really clean fridge.Haystack Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01623665634391378132noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5021248701695174732.post-49647677536483061662009-04-15T13:56:00.000-07:002009-04-15T14:01:30.709-07:00Do you need a smile today! My friend Emily has put together a really good blog with really funny stories. We had a birthday party with most of our family to celebrate. As usual, it was CRAZY!!!
My family room started out clean and is now just as messy as before, but now we have more toys to get out. The hit of the party is a train table that we got them that is a lot bigger than I thought. It now takes up half our family room. I can't wait for the excitement to wear off so it can go downstairs.

Nate and I are kind of dumb because we got them cool presents, but we should have realized that they don't really care and that their favorite thing that they still play with from Christmas is this box. Elias and McKay have the same monster trucks so they can't fight over them, I thought so I thought, but it backfired on me because now they both want them all. Maisey is wearing her princess tiara, earrings and carrying her wand, which all got broken in the first 5 minutes. Nathan had the week between Christmas and New Year's off so I decided it was time we finish the remodeling of the upstairs bathroom we started last spring. Nathan was starting school on the 5th so I figured it was now or never. I started to rip the wallpaper down last spring and the walls underneath were a mess. We needed to replaster most spots were the wallpaper took off the wall and left big holes. That took 3 different mudding and sanding tries to get it right. Then the window casing was the next project. There was thick white glossy paint on it that was chipping in lots of places. We knew that there was lead paint at least one time on there, so comes our problem. If you research on the internet, lead paint is very bad and so is removing it. To sand it, you are not supposed to have kids in the house and are supposed to pay a professional lots of money which we don't have. That left us with chemical strippers. It took Nate 3 days and 3 different applications of stripper to get it off. See below for the intermediate phase.

See below for the final phase before we gave up and get ready to repaint it. We didn't leave the wood color because it wouldn't have matched the rest of the new trim in the room. It is beautiful wood though.

So we finally finished stripping it and are in the process of repainting it WHITE, the same color it was before we started!!! At least you can see the detail and we didn't have to sand the chipped spots and cause brain damaged children.

We still didn't finish the bathroom! It is primed and the trim painted. I will post finished pictures when we get it finished (in another year.) If anyone has a miracle stripper for lead paint, please let us know.Haystack Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01623665634391378132noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5021248701695174732.post-88739218842316889312008-12-28T20:07:00.000-08:002008-12-30T14:03:37.172-08:00Christmas MorningIt's official, we made it through Christmas with no major accidents. We had a great time, ate too much food and got too much stuff. Elias keeps telling us we should give our old toys away. I need to listen to him and not think of how much money the toys cost us so we can't just give them away.

On the 23rd, we had our annual Nalder party with a guest appearance by Santa himself. Elias was amazed that Santa already knew that he wanted a Mr Potatohead. McKay went right up to him, but kept looking at him like Santa was crazy. Maisey was last and had been crying ever since he came in. When I set her on his lap, she jumped off like a scared cat while screaming "Mommy, Mommy." I'm sure that she is now tramatized for life and will never see a Santa without crying, but what would Christmas with out that.

Christmas morning was so fun. I think it's much more fun with kids and seeing their amazement that Santa brought them toys for no real reason. Elias is just beginning to figure it out. I am going to miss being able to threaten to call Santa if he's not good. Anyway, as soon as they looked at their toys, they were trying to take someone else's toys and so the fighting began. It still hasn't really stopped yet. They may play together for a minute, but then World War III breaks out. I find this amazing since we now have doubled our toy count. Why must everyone want the same toy at the same time. After they found the gifts from Santa, it was time to open presents. McKay especially could care less. He was too busy playing with the old toys. Nate and I ended up opening a lot of the presents ourselves. Can you say too many presents? It was still so much fun and I can't wait to do it again next year.

Below is a list of the best/worst toys of Christmas 2008. People ask me all the time if this stage of life is easier than when they were little babies. I think that it is way more fun, but also more difficult. They now have opinions and have tantrums when they don't get what they want.

When I looked at these pictures I think that they know Santa is coming soon and are on their best behavior. They are so cute and innocent. It also could be that in the heat of a tantrum or fight I don't have time to find a camera. Sorry for the bragging, but I couldn't help it.Haystack Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01623665634391378132noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5021248701695174732.post-87191247900194248582008-12-08T13:01:00.000-08:002008-12-08T13:18:33.057-08:00Park City AdventureWell, we finally did it. We took all 3 kids for an overnight stay at a condo in Park City. Normally, we would not do this because we can't leave the kids overnight, but the allure of a free condo and $50 convinced us. All we had to do was go on a short tour. Elias could go to the kids club and the twins could come with us and would be fine. Elias loved the club. The twins didn't love it so much but saved us from having to hear too much how a condo would be great for us and we could leave it to them when we die. I think the salesperson was actually scared of the condo being ruined if we actually stayed for a week, so he didn't push too hard. It also could have been that Maisey had a stinky diaper and he couldn't take it anymore.

Anyway, we made it out with our life savings still intact and our $50. We were now 2nd class citizens because we didn't buy, but we still had a great time. We stayed in a very small one bedroom condo with lots of doors that were slammed many, many times while we were there. We swam in the pool and jumped on the bed with no accidents. We may even be up to actually going on a vacation now.

After we checked out, we went geocaching which is one of our favorite activities. Check it out at
www.geocaching.com
It is like a treasure hunt for everyone in the whole family.

We then headed for home with tired kids and a new sense of appreciation for our own home where we can be as loud as we want without neighbors 2 feet away.

Like everyone else, we are getting excited for Christmas, but still don't have a tree up. We are not sure what to do because it would only be minutes before the twins pulled on their heads. If anyone has suggestions, please let us know. We may have to only have the Fisher Price nativity set as our only decoration this year and our standard Santa on the chimney.

Merry Christmas!!Haystack Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01623665634391378132noreply@blogger.com3
